Home remedies for hair loss

I researched each at home remedy that patients have told me they have tried to see if any had any scientific research behind it. After all, most of our medical treatments for hair loss have been discovered by accident. Minoxidil was discovered to grow hair as a side effect of an oral high blood pressure medication, Latisse as a side effect of a glaucoma eye drop, and spironolactone as a side effect of another blood pressure medication.

Here is the list of home remedies patients have shared over the years and the science that is out there...

1. Onion juice

Onion juice has a medical study that evaluated its effectiveness in a particular type of autoimmune hair loss called alopecia areata. This is an autoimmune hair loss. A study from 2002 comparing onion juice to tap water did show faster regrowth in the onion juice group!

2. Apple cider vinegar

I feel like I have heard patients use this on just about everything. It does have proven antimicrobial qualities, anti yeast and antioxidant. I couldn’t find a medical study evaluating its effectiveness for alopecia.

3. Egg mask

‘Egg masks’ for hair growth sounds kinda stinky but used more than I realized! A study did demonstrate that chicken egg yolk peptides stimulate hair growth by a growth factor called vascular endothelial growth factor production.

4. Ginseng

There actually are some studies showing the hair growth potential for ginseng. It is thought to work by improving the circulation by new vessel formation to help deliver oxygen and key nutrients to the hair follicle.

5. Aloe Vera

I actually couldn’t find any studies supporting the use of aloe Vera for hair loss.

6. Henna

Many cultures use henna for hair dye and color. I cannot find any studies evaluating its effectiveness to regrow hair.

7. Rice bran extract

There actually is a study evaluating the effect of this on the expression of hair growth phase molecules in hair papilla or roots. This does have some promising data to support its potential for us.

8. Tumeric

I have seen patients come in with Tumeric rubbed all over their skin cancers prior to removal. This spice is gaining a lot of attention! There is promising data supporting its use for hair growth!
