When it comes to skin lightening the focus of many products is the enzyme tyrosinase. Tyrosinase is the rate-limiting enzyme involved in the synthesis or production of skin pigment called melanin. Mulberry plants have several compound that have been extracted from both roots and stems with known ability to block tyrosinase.

Oxyresveratrol which is a known strong inhibitor of the enzyme tyrosinase is found in both the root and stems of mulberry plants. The effects of mulberry plants have been found in some studies to be as strong as kojic acid, a very common ingredient used for skin lightening creams. It can be  found in a variety of products intended for skin lightening and scar improvement. It is not commonly associated with skin irritation and tends to be well tolerated.
