There are a number of preservatives that many people point out as ingredients to avoid in skin care, however, there is a culprit for a number of skin challenges I see that tends to come up more commonly in my experience. Fragrances in skin care products can lead to a variety of concerns. Skin irritation, allergic reactions, rosacea flares, inflammation that can trigger acne, itchy or runny eyes, even swelling of the eyelids or lips can all be triggered by fragrances in products. If you generally do not have problems with products this may not be an issue for you. However if you routinely find that it is difficult to find a product that agrees with your skin, this may be a good place to start.
To truly find a product without fragrance look for the words “fragrance free”. The word “unscented” does not necessarily mean there is no fragrance. Unscented just means there is not a noticeable scent. There could actually be scent or fragrance added to mask the scent of the ingredients. Products listed as “fragrance free” may actually have a noticeable smell but its only because fragrance was not added to mask the scent of the other ingredients. You can see how frustrating this can be to navigate for consumers!
